Usually you take small children on your arm. But when a German
asks you “Nimmst du mich gerade auf den Arm?” (Are you taking
me on your arm right now?), they want to know if you are messing
with them – since you are basically treating them like a small,
gullible child. This idiom was first documented in 1850.
