London-based photographer Dorothy Bohm (Germany, 1924 – London, 2023) is hailed a doyenne of British photography. Originally trained as a studio portraitist in wartime Manchester, she started working outside the studio in the late 1940s, travelling extensively thereafter and establishing herself as a leading humanist street photographer. Focusing on fragments of the urban landscape, her work often highlights elements of life that are otherwise overlooked. She was involved with the founding of The Photographers’ Gallery in 1971 and its Associate Director for the next 15 years. Bohm’s work has been celebrated with several major solo shows, including A World Observed 1940-2010: Photographs by Dorothy Bohm at Manchester Art Gallery (2010) and Women in Focus: Photographs by Dorothy Bohm at the Museum of London (2012).
