“When I was a child all photographs were in black and white. I loved the idea that you could physically walk through the picture frame and enter into a black and white photograph.”
Clarisse d’Arcimoles (b. 1986, France) has performance at the heart of her work. Having studied Set Design for Performance at Central Saint Martins followed by a postgraduate course in photography, her work combines these two interests. Fascinated by the idea of going back in time, and photography’s strength to make memories tangible, d’Arcimoles’ work derives from sustained relationships, sense of place and history. From restaging personal snapshots to anonymous photographic portraits, d’Arcimoles takes satisfaction living within the fiction she is creating. Her work was exhibited in The Photographers’ Gallery graduate photography exhibition, Fresh Faced and Wild Eyed, 2010 and a solo exhibition, Forgotten Tale, 2016. She was also shown in Newspeak: British Art Now (Part One) at the Saatchi Gallery, London in 2010.
