"Photography is a magic thing. A thing that has mysterious odors, a little strange and frightening, something one quickly grows to love."
Painter and photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue (1894-1986, France) is well known for his 20th century photographs of automobiles, planes and Parisian fashion models. He was only 'discovered' as a photographer in 1963, at the age of 69, and quickly rose to fame when an exhibition of his work opened at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Throughout the course of his life Lartigue created an exceptional body of photographs, filling scores of albums with his prints and written diaries. He mainly created black and white photographs, but his painterly-background also led him to experiment with early colour processes. Today, Lartigue is celebrated as one of the founders of modern photography besides Richard Avedon and Irving Penn. His daring, snapshot aesthetic is central to his whole body of work.
