“I like to collect things and have done so since I was a child, and I think photographers generally are collectors – they amass images from their work. I guess I just like things and enjoy the little differences in things that are basically the same.”
Luke Stephenson (b. 1983, UK) is a London-based photographer with Britain and the British psyche at the core of his work. He photographs what to many epitomises the eccentricity of Britain. Often humorous in their outlook, his series' range from prize budgerigars to clown eggs. Whether animate or inanimate objects, Stephenson creates affectionate portraits of his subjects and documents worlds often hidden from the mainstream. By combining his unique style of photography with the formal language of studio portraiture, the artist lends his photographed subjects an affectionate and often human presence. He was awarded the Jerwood Photography Prize in 2005 and his work The Incomplete Dictionary of Showbirds formed an impressive installation at Selfridges, London in 2017.
