An exemplar of the tradition of 'concerned photography' and a passionate advocate of the power of images to communicate and change minds,  Sebastião Salgado (b. 1944, Brazil) is one of the most widely-respected of contemporary documentary photographer. Originally trained as an economist, his in-depth series’ document the lives of some of the world’s poorest and most powerless communities, revealing strength, hope and nobility even in the bleakest of circumstances. He is further reknown for his stunning, formalist, black-and-white photographs of the natural world, portraying landscapes that are still “innocent” in terms of mass intervention. Key influences are Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa.

Sebastião Salgado has been honored with numerous distinctions and photographic prizes. He has also been lauded for his humanitarian and environmental focus, being named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and awarded Honorary Doctorates from a number of universities.
