"On my walks, I'm always observing my surroundings carefully. If I don't get that 'feeling' I won't make pictures – it has just become an instinct. It's the only time I'm really part of the environment, the landscape, and very attuned to it."
Cyrus Mahboubian (b. 1986, London, UK) is known for his contemplative approach to photography and continued use of analogue materials, especially polaroid. His intentionally slow process is a response to the increasing influence of technology in our lives.
Mahboubian’s Composites emerge from the landscape, with time as a central element of his artistic process. The ritual of walking becomes a form of meditation, as his Polaroid photographs are created without a predetermined path. Later, he cuts and rejoins the prints together to form new, dreamlike hybrid landscapes. This hybridity, or ‘in-betweenness,’ reflects Mahboubian’s own bicultural identity, while the absence of dates or place names invites subjective and fluid interpretation.
Mahboubian's work has been exhibited internationally since 2010. Notable exhibitions include Photo London at Somerset House (2024); Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford (2019); and Fotografia Europea festival, Italy (2016). His first book VISCERA was published in 2019. Mahboubian’s work is in the permanent collection of Soho House, as well as numerous private collections worldwide.
